The shortlist, row by row
Thirty four studios were assessed and five made the list. Scores run from 4.9 down to 4.5 and rest on shipped work rather than sales material.

How we scored the studios
Four inputs decide a position. The portfolio of games a studio has actually released carries the most weight, followed by the technical depth visible in those releases, then retention and store rating data from live titles, and finally how clearly the company reported on its own work while we were asking questions.
Nobody buys a place. Where a commercial relationship exists it is disclosed in the footer of every page, and it has no bearing on the order above. A studio that declined to answer our questions was scored on public evidence alone rather than penalised for silence.
Scores are revisited every quarter and move in both directions. A studio that loses its senior engineering team drops; one that ships a title holding strong day thirty retention climbs. If a position changes, the review text changes with it.
